You Can Take A Child Backpacking!

People are often hesitant to take their children backpacking even for short periods of time. This is unfortunate for a number of reasons. First and foremost, children love to go on an adventure and explore the natural environment. You do have options if you wish to begin exposing your children to the hobby of backpacking if you want to.

You first you must find the perfect backpack to fit the size of your child.  Here are some suggestions that may work for your child. Small children will only be able to carry a small childrens Camelpak to carry their own water, a couple snacks, an emergency blanket, and a whistle. As they grow, they will be able to grow into larger packs and carry more weight and more of their own gear. It doesn't take long for children to be able to carry more either.  In only a couple of years they can carry their clothing and their ultra light sleeping bag on heir own. Children transistion from a camelbak to a day pack or school backpack. They may be able to fit into their first rigid frame backpack around the age of 9. By then hopefully they will be as hooked as you are.

Your childs safety must be taken into consideration though. There are a few things that you can teach your children to help keep them safe while you are hiking. It comes down to some simple rules for kids to follow. They should stay in sight at all times. If a child does get lost they should be instructed to stay calm.  Sit down in one spot and blow on a safety whistle to draw searchers attention. Finally it helps to instruct children how to use a safetly blanket.

Backpacking can be a safe and rewarding hobby for both adults and children alike. You get to see the word through your children's eyes. It is well worth it to spend the adventuring time with your child.
