Are you modeling healthy habits for your children? Hopefully this list of five healthy habits will inspire you to be the best parent you can be.
Model exercise so your child learns to be active. Unplug the TV, put away the video games, and get moving. Discover a sport or active game you and your child both think is fun, and then make a point of doing this together often. Some ideas: play Frisbee in the backyard, kick around a soccer ball, or go swimming.
Teach your child to eat healthfully. This can be a challenge since we live in the land of plenty, where treats are served at almost every meal and pop tarts are considered a legitimate breakfast option. Serve healthy food at home and pack your child's lunch, sending fruit and vegetables instead of chips and Cheetohs. Give each meal a grade, explaining what are the healthiest and least healthy parts of the meal so your child will be equipped to make good choices later.
Teach your child the value of sleep. Lack of sleep contributes to obesity and can make it difficult for your child to handle his or her emotions well. Prioritize sleep and tuck kids in bed at least thirty minutes before you think they need to be asleep.
Model how to handle stressful situations healthfully. Teach your child how to handle emotionally difficult situations, showing them how to express needs, wants, expectations, anger, and regret calmly and coherently. Show your child how to relieve stress through a walk or meditation.
Help your child make good friend choices. If your child is making poor choices, help them understand why these kids might not be so good for them, and introduce them to kids who are better for them. Help your child make good friends by inviting kids over, hosting activities, and making it easy for your child to spend time with good kids.
Parenting can be challenging, but you'll give it your best, and that's all anyone can ask. By modeling these habits, you'll help them live out healthy habits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
